Luke 4:24 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked. 23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’” 24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.
Inspiration:
Sometimes it may seem as though those who have either known you for a while or who are closest to you are the ones who doubt you the most. You have goals, dreams, and aspirations. You have a vision of walking in the calling of which God has called you. Yet, those who feel as though they "know" you, attempt to hold you captive to the confines of the limitations they have unfairly and prematurely placed upon you. It's highly probable that these "close friends" don't really know you at all... or at least not as well as they think.
Parents are notorious for this. Either they enable their child, literally and figuratively spoon feeding well into adolescence, or they typecast that child into a role (favorable or unfavorable*) and that individual can do no right or wrong outside of this prescription.
A pet-peeve of mine was revealed in a conversation with a friend where I expressed, "You don't know everything there is to know about me!" Similarly, in my profession as an educator, I am very over-protective of my students. If anyone attempts to deem one of my kiddos as outright "shy" or "aggressive" or any other seemingly prematurely conclusive identifier, I quickly run to their defense. It has always made me quite uncomfortable to crunch the numbers of so little information and arrive at a verdict that may ultimately determine the trajectory of a person's access, growth, and accomplishments.
In my experience, I have noticed, much like Jesus' experience in his hometown in Luke 4:14-29, when those who claim to "know you" attempt to hold you captive to the confines of who and what they think you are, they end up forfeiting a blessing. Jesus went about Galilee teaching, healing and blessing the people. Yet when he arrived at his hometown of Nazareth, the people doubted and murmured, "Is not this Joseph's son?"And in doing so, the Nazarenes did not actually prevent Jesus from fulfilling His calling, but they did relinquish the benefits, teachings, healing, and blessings that the rest of the Galilean towns received at the hand of the King of Kings.
*Note: It is possible to both typecast "up" and typecast "down". Both are equally detrimental. For the sake of time and space, I won't go into detail here but can do so in the comments section upon request.*
TASK OF THE DAY:
1) Be the support today. There are people close to you, people in your "hometown" or proximity that have a calling on their lives. This divine calling is coursing through their veins and most likely does not look like their current situation. You gain nothing by doubting them. Simply allow yourself to be blessed by being available and supportive to them in their journey towards destiny.
2) Know who God said you are today. As revealed in my favorite movie of all times, The Matrix, no one can tell you who you are. You must know for yourself. As a preacher said, "Whatever God is doing in you and in your life, He has been doing it ALL your life." Be who God said you are! Scripture supports: Phil 1:6 & Jer 1:5.
